Under the leadership of Manavgat Mayor Op. Dr. Niyazi Nefi Kara, the carbon footprint of the International Manavgat Crete to Side Culture and Flavor Festival held in Side Ancient City between April 24-26, 2025 was calculated using scientific methods. By calculating the carbon footprint of an event of this scale in Türkiye, Manavgat Municipality took an important step towards environmental sustainability and became a pioneer in this field. The festival's carbon footprint was calculated with the eventCO2 tool developed by 3pmetrics, one of the institutions specialized in sustainability and environment. The method used is based on the GHG Protocol, which is globally accepted in measuring greenhouse gas emissions. Reporting was done in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2018, one of ISO's environmental performance standards.

It was calculated that a total of 96,384.8 kilograms of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e) emissions were released into nature as a result of activities such as transportation, accommodation, catering, electricity consumption and various purchases during the three-day festival.

Most of this value came from two main items:

Transportation: 52%

Accommodation: 39.6%

The remaining 8.4% was made up of catering services, energy use and other purchases.

When compared to the festival’s 7,000-person audience, the carbon footprint per capita was 13.8 kg CO₂e. This value indicates a moderate environmental impact when compared to similar-sized international festivals.

In his statement on the subject, Manavgat Mayor Op. Dr. Niyazi Nefi Kara stated that environmental responsibility is an integral part of municipalism:

“We have transparently revealed the carbon footprint of our International Manavgat Crete to Side Culture and Flavor Festival, which we have organized for the first time this year. We are not only bringing together cultures and flavors, but also calculating our impact on the environment. Our goal is to reduce carbon emissions and minimize our impact on nature every year while making this festival a tradition. In all our events, we will address issues such as energy use, transportation, waste and material preferences with more environmentally friendly and sustainable steps.”

Carbon footprint is the greenhouse gas emissions released into the atmosphere due to anthropogenic activities such as an event, product or service expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO₂e).
