Modern Shelter Era Across Türkiye: Construction Process Begins in 81 Provinces

Turkey is taking comprehensive steps to address rising regional tensions and potential disaster scenarios. According to NTV, studies conducted under the coordination of the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization and Climate Change have determined that the current shelter infrastructure is inadequate. In accordance with the decision taken at the cabinet meetings chaired by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, TOKİ will build modern shelters in all 81 provinces.
The project, which also draws on global examples, examined models from Israel, Japan, and Switzerland. Construction has begun in several cities, particularly Ankara. The planned shelters are envisioned as durable structures that citizens can quickly access in emergencies such as war, natural disasters, or nuclear leaks.
The Shelter Regulation, which came into effect in Türkiye in 1987, mandates the construction of shelters in large buildings. However, it is known that in many apartment buildings, these spaces are used as parking lots or storage areas. The new project aims to address this deficiency and increase public safety.
