The 2025-2026 academic year began with unresolved problems at universities in cities from Istanbul to Urfa. The economic crisis has led to numerous problems, from housing to transportation, and the dormitories where students are accommodated continue to face ongoing challenges. CHP Mersin Deputy Talat Dinçer brought the issue of student dormitories to Parliament.
Drawing attention to the chain of accidents, lack of inspections and negligence occurring in state and private dormitories across Türkiye, Dinçer submitted a Parliamentary Inquiry Motion and submitted parliamentary questions for the Minister of Youth and Sports and the Minister of National Education to answer.
Throughout 2024, a series of elevator accidents, fires, food poisoning, and hygiene problems have victimized thousands of students, and some have lost their lives. Dinçer stated, "Students are facing the danger of losing their lives while trying to exercise their right to housing," and that this situation is a clear violation of the state's constitutional obligation to uphold the right to housing, safety , and health. Dinçer stated that the underlying causes of these incidents are a lack of oversight, incompetent management, and the private sector's profit-driven approach. CHP member Dinçer submitted a Parliamentary Inquiry Motion to the Presidency of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) requesting a comprehensive investigation into all KYK (private dormitories) and private dormitories across Turkey in terms of security, hygiene, infrastructure, food safety, and staff adequacy.
