Savings of 108 billion liras in 9 years with the Osmangazi Bridge

Minister Uraloğlu, in his written statement, said that the Osmangazi Bridge, one of Türkiye's most important transportation projects, was opened to traffic on July 1, 2016, and that it was the 9th anniversary of its opening. Uraloğlu stated that the Osmangazi Bridge, the most important link of the 426-kilometer Istanbul-Izmir Highway, connects the two sides of the Gulf of Izmit, and said, "While it takes approximately 1.5 hours to cross the gulf by car using the existing road and 45-60 minutes by ferry, this time has been reduced to only 6 minutes thanks to the Osmangazi Bridge."

Minister Uraloğlu pointed out that thanks to the uninterrupted passage provided by the bridge, both time and fuel were saved, and said, "With the bridge, approximately 23 billion liras of fuel savings and 85 billion liras of time savings were achieved in 9 years, reaching a total savings of 108 billion liras. This environmentally friendly advantage also significantly reduces carbon emissions. With the Osmangazi Bridge, we have achieved a carbon emission reduction of 1.4 million tons in 9 years."

'TOTAL LENGTH IS 2 THOUSAND 682 METERS'

Emphasizing that the total length of the Osmangazi Bridge built between Dilovası and Hersek Cape is 2,682 meters, Uraloğlu said, “With a central span of 1,550 meters, our bridge ranks 7th among the largest central span suspension bridges open for operation in the world. We completed this giant work in 39 months and put it into the service of our nation. If the steel wires used in the construction of the bridge were added end to end, they would reach a length of 84,518 kilometers. This distance is long enough to go around the world more than twice. The 109,490 tons of steel used in its construction is equivalent to 73,000 cars. The main span deck area is 96,364 square meters, which is equivalent to approximately 14 football fields.”
