Liam Cahill Delivers Tongue-In-Cheek Response To Dónal Óg Cusack Tipperary Remark

Liam Cahill Delivers Tongue-In-Cheek Response To Dónal Óg Cusack Tipperary Remark

Liam Cahill appears to have had Dónal Óg Cusack's famous pre-championship comments about Tipperary on his mind when speaking at the launch of the county's new strategic plan this week.

According to reporting from the Irish Examiner's John Fogarty, the Tipperary GAA manager remarked that "nobody rises as quickly as Tipperary" during Thursday evening's launch of the county's new five-year strategy in Nenagh.

The comment appeared to be a tongue-in-cheek reference to Cusack's remarks earlier this year ahead of the Munster Championship.

Liam Cahill Delivers Tongue-In-Cheek Response To Dónal Óg Cusack Tipperary Remark

Speaking on RTÉ's League Sunday before the championship began, the former Cork goalkeeper said that no county "rises or falls faster than Tipperary".

I think of Tipperary as All-Ireland champions and nobody rising or falling as fast in my experience of being a hurling person.

As long as I'm involved in hurling, I think they can rise very fast, but they also fall faster than anybody else.

Dónal Óg Cusack questioned whether the reigning All-Ireland champions could cope with the pressure of attempting to win back-to-back Liam MacCarthy Cups for the first time since the 1960s.

At the time, Tipperary entered the championship carrying large expectations after their 2025 All-Ireland triumph.

However, the Munster campaign did not go as planned.

Cahill's side lost to Cork, Limerick and Clare, while also drawing with Waterford. The defending All-Ireland champions failed to qualify from the province and their championship season came to an early end before the All-Ireland series even began.

It represented a disappointing season for a side that had lifted the Liam MacCarthy Cup less than 12 months earlier, giving added significance to Cahill's light-hearted response this week.

The comments came during the launch of Tipperary GAA's new strategic plan for the period from 2026 to 2030.

According to reporting from Fogarty in The Irish Examiner, one of the central ambitions of the plan for Tipperary GAA is the development of a state-of-the-art centre of excellence at Coolmore Dr Morris Park.

While Thursday's event focused primarily on the county's long-term future, Liam Cahill's quip ensured there was at least one glance back at a difficult summer for Tipperary GAA.

Whether intended as a joke, a subtle response or simply an acknowledgement of the rollercoaster nature of Tipperary hurling, the remark suggested the manager had not forgotten Cusack's comments.

And if Cusack argued that nobody rises or falls faster than Tipperary, Liam Cahill now seems happy to point out that they still know how to rise.
