O2 confirms free upgrade for thousands of iPhone and Android users

There's good news for some O2 customers this weekend, with the UK mobile network confirming a free upgrade is being switched on for Android and iPhone owners. The boost will mean anyone heading to the British Grand Prix will find their connectivity is far better than before. That's thanks to a new high-capacity mobile network being installed around the track and the surrounding area.
The upgrade is being delivered in partnership with Boldyn Networks, with customers able to access the new distributed antenna system (DAS), which spans across 570 acres, including the 3.66-mile Grand Prix circuit.
This new deployment marks a significant upgrade for the iconic circuit. In the past, mobile operators have relied on temporary infrastructure to support major events at the track, which is often less reliable and slower than a fixed system. Boldyn’s network is now the first permanent mobile solution at Silverstone.
With the upgrade in place, it's hoped that O2 customers will be able to share photos and videos, follow live race updates, access event information and stay connected throughout the venue without fear of dropouts or buffering.
"Whether it's sharing a video of a dramatic overtake, finding your way around the venue or keeping in touch with friends and family, connectivity has become a huge part of the fan experience for racing fans," said Professor Robert Joyce, Director of Mobile Access Engineering at O2.
"Going live on Silverstone's new dedicated network infrastructure means O2 customers can enjoy a faster and more reliable connection at one of the biggest events in the British sporting calendar."
And Paul Osborne, Chief Commercial Officer at Boldyn Networks UK, added: "This weekend’s British Grand Prix will draw over half a million fans, driving record demand for connectivity.
O2 is moving first, giving its customers priority access to the enhanced experience powered by our state-of-the-art Silverstone network. At Boldyn, we’re proud to be supporting Silverstone and advancing connectivity at the UK’s most iconic venues."
Those who use O2 won't need to do anything. The network is live and phones will automatically connect once on site.
