Must-watch shows this week: King and Conqueror, Dear Viv and Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over

Top names including Jamie Oliver and Stacey Dooley are back on TV, but it is a new period drama starring Happy Valley's James Norton that will keep people gripped this week.

He stars as Harold alongside Game Of Thrones' Nikolaj Coster-Waldau as William of Normandy in a new BBC period drama set in the years leading up to 1066's Battle of Hastings in King and Conqueror.

Meanwhile Stacey Dooley is back sleeping over at interesting people's houses in Stacey Dooley Sleeps Over, while Jamie Oliver is back in the kitchen to help up eat healthily on Channel 4.

Elsewhere, Rylan is hosting a new series of Dating Naked for Paramount+ and BBC Three has a tribute to The Vivienne. Here's the lowdown on what to look out for on TV this week.

Sunday, 9pm, BBC1

Every British school child knows that the Battle of Hastings took place in 1066, but what led up to the legendary conflict?

Happy Valley’s James Norton and Game of Thrones star Nikolaj Coster-Waldau star as Harold of Wessex and William, Duke of Normandy in this eight part period drama that tells the story of two men, once friends and comrades at arms, whose beliefs and drive for power put them on opposite sides in the fight for the crown of England.

Clemence Poesy and Emily Beecham star as William and Harold’s wives, alongside a cast that also includes Eddie Marsan, Juliet Stevenson and Jean-Marc Barr.

Sunday, 9pm, Sky Crime

This three part documentary focuses on the Gilgo Beach killings – a series of murders that took place on Long Island in New York between 1993 and 2010. After four sets of remains were found near Gilgo beach in 2010, police went on to find six more sets in nearby counties the following year, but it took until 2023 for a man to be charged with the crimes.

Featuring interviews with alleged killer Rex Heuermann’s wife, children and friends, the series follows the police investigation into a Manhattan architect they believe was leading a double life for years, hiding secrets from his crimes in his own home under the noses of his family.

Monday, 8pm, Channel 4

Former Naked Chef and champion of school dinners Jamie Oliver is back with a new book and TV show that aims to help us all lead more sustainable and healthy lives.

With new trends flooding our social media feeds daily and a mountain of new supplements, diets and products on the shelves promising quick health fixes, Jamie is determined to strip things back to the bare essentials we all need in our diets. He has also called in a host of experts, including Dr Megan Rossi, Dr Emily Leeming, and Professor Sarah Berry to help members of the public struggling with everyday health issues such as energy levels, memory, sleep and immunity.

Presenter Stacey Dooley MBE is once again inviting herself to stay at the houses of interesting and unusual people for 72 hours to find out what really makes them tick.

Previously, she’s slept over at a Mormon home, the house of a 70 year old dominatrix and with a family of eco-warriors, but in the sixth season Stacey is the guest of her most controversial subject yet - content creator Lily Phillips. Stacey meets 23 year old Lily at her London home, where the OnlyFans star talks about her career and the notoriety she gained following a stunt in which she had sex with 100 men in one day.

Tuesday, 9pm, Channel 4

The BAFTA award winning series returns, with 12 new members of the public enlisted to be on the jury in a re-enactment of a real life murder trial.

At Liverpool Crown Court, a young mother stands trial after stabbing her boyfriend in the chest with a kitchen knife. She says it was in self defence, but while some jurors believe she is the victim of domestic violence, others aren’t so sure.

Meghan Markle returns for a second series of her lifestyle show, which is about “embracing playfulness over perfection,” and finding joy in DIY projects and cooking challenges. The Duchess of Sussex’s guests include Queer Eye’s Tan France, model Chrissy Teigen and chef Christina Tosi.

From Wednesday, Prime Video

A prequel to 2022’s hit action thriller The Terminal List, this drama series follows Ben Edwards (Taylor Kitsch) through his journey as a Navy SEAL to the clandestine side of CIA Special Operations. Chris Pratt reprises his role as James Reece alongside Tom Hopper and Luke Hemsworth.

Thursday, 8pm, Channel 4

Britain is, as is well known, a nation of dog lovers, and there’s definitely lots of canine love on this dog-dating show where people are matched with the rescue dog of their dreams.

Filmed at Woodgreen Pets Charity in Cambridgeshire, this eighth season of the cute and cuddly reality series follows a new group of potential owners and the pooches they are matched with who are all looking for their forever homes.

Thursday, BBC Three and iPlayer

Drag Race fans were devastated in January this year when it was announced that drag artist James Lee Williams, also known as The Vivienne, had tragically passed away at the age of just 32.

This film tribute to the UK’s first Drag Super Star is a celebratory personal portrait of the artist, featuring family photos, home video and never before seen footage from behind the scenes of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK. It also features interviews with The Vivienne’s family, as well as early mentors and friends, including Baga Chipz, Tia Kofi and Trinity Tuck, and sensitively touches on The Vivienne’s self-confessed struggle with ketamine addiction.

Thursday, 9pm, Sky Atlantic

Alfie Allen and Spooks’ Shazad Latif star as drug smuggler Max and enigmatic outsider JJ, two unlikely friends who become caught up in a cartel’s plot to transport uranium across North Africa. With the CIA and MI6 in hot pursuit, the pair have to decide whether to save themselves or risk everything to stop a potential nuclear bomb from falling into the wrong hands.

The Handmaid’s Tale’s Samira Wiley costars as CIA agent Cassie Elliott, who is convinced the hapless duo are in league with violent extremists in this five part series based on the non fiction book Atomic Bazaar.

Friday, Paramount+

Rylan is back hosting a second season of the dating series that truly leaves nothing to the imagination.

Ten brand new daters are ready to strip off their clothes and their emotional armour in an attempt to find love on a tropical island, with each singleton hoping to dodge the ditching at the Dumping Ground that takes place at the end of each episode. Expect tears, drama and betrayals as well as possible romance as they all compete to be the final couple who gets to walk away with £50,000 – and their clothes, we presume.

Friday, Apple TV+

Actor and comedian Soojeong Son hosts this new song battle series, in which Western chart-toppers team up with celebrated Korean pop groups to reimagine one of their biggest songs, which they then perform in front of a live audience in Seoul.

In each episode, the audience decides who has given the performance of the night, and there are some mega acts to choose from including K-pop artists ITZY, JO1 and Billlie, and Western artists Megan Thee Stallion, former Spice Girls Mel B and Emma Bunton, Jess Glynne, Kylie Minogue, TLC and 80s pop star Boy George.

If you are gripped by the new series of The Jury: Murder Trial, it’s worth checking out the Australian version of the reality series. As with the British show, Death on the Staircase is a re-enactment by actors of a real trial, with members of the public brought in to hear the evidence before they decide whether the defendant is guilty or not.

Twelve everyday Australians consider the manslaughter case of a man accused of the death of his partner, who fell down the stairs at their home and died. Will the jury reach the same verdict as in the original trial? And what happened to the defendant?

Two years after the disappearance of teenage friends Veronica and Marta from a quiet coastal town, the investigation is closed due to lack of evidence. However, the grandmother of one of the two girls, Isabel, decides to carry out her own investigation beyond the law.

She will do whatever it takes to uncover the truth, but what begins as a search for the culprit turns into a story of revenge in this three part Spanish thriller series. Spanish star Kiti Manver stars as Isabel, alongside Money Heist’s Álvaro Morte.
