Do not ignore the swelling in your leg

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT), which manifests with symptoms such as sudden swelling, pain, and tenderness in the leg, is a life-threatening condition. Factors such as long journeys, rest after surgery, or genetic predisposition can trigger DVT, which leads to clot formation in the vein. Cardiovascular Surgery Specialist Prof. Dr. Faruk Hökenek of Medipol Bahçelievler Hospital emphasized the importance of consulting a doctor immediately, especially if you experience swelling and pain in your legs.
PAY ATTENTION TO SWELLING AND PAIN: Prof. Dr. Hökenek said, "If you notice swelling in your leg when you wake up in the morning, or if you develop symptoms such as swelling, discoloration, redness, or bruising in your leg after a long trip or after a few days of rest in bed after surgery, definitely don't ignore it. If you experience difficulty putting pressure on your foot or pain in your calf, you should definitely consult a healthcare provider."
RISK OF PULMONARY EMBOLISM Professor Dr. Hökenek emphasized that clots can break off and block pulmonary vessels in untreated deep vein thrombosis, emphasizing the need for immediate hospitalization if symptoms such as shortness of breath, palpitations, or sudden difficulty breathing appear. Professor Dr. Hökenek stated, "These symptoms are a sign that the clot has traveled to the lungs and are very dangerous. Prompt intervention is essential to avoid endangering your life."
EARLY INTERVENTION SAVES LIVES Prof. Dr. Hökenek explained that there are different approaches to treating deep vein thrombosis depending on the clot density, saying, "If there is a dense clot in young patients, we intervene quickly with clot-dissolving medications. Milder cases are treated with oral blood thinners. Therefore, when symptoms begin, you should definitely consult a doctor without delay."
BEWARE OF PERMANENT SWELLING ! Prof. Dr. Hökenek noted that approximately one-third of patients may develop permanent swelling in their legs after treatment, saying, "Patients with deep vein thrombosis may experience swelling in their legs even after treatment. Therefore, early diagnosis and regular follow-up are as crucial as treatment."
