Profeco reveals American cheese brands that deliver what they promise.

Last January, the Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) released the results of a quality study conducted on products labeled as American cheese or imitation American cheese sold in Mexico. The analysis reviewed ingredients, labeling, nutritional content, calorie intake, fat and protein content, as well as the presence of starch and compliance with official Mexican standards.

The study included 16 American-style cheeses and 24 imitations. The study reveals that Profeco identified brands that don't deliver on their promises or that have misleading labeling, but also others that do deliver on their promises.

What did Profeco evaluate in the American cheese for sale?

Profeco analyzed aspects such as:

• Nutritional contribution: Protein, fat, carbohydrate and caloric content were determined.
• Water content: This was verified, as in some brands the added water is even the first ingredient.
• Presence of starch: Its presence was determined because manufacturers use it as an alternative to increase performance, provide stability, and reduce production costs.
• Sodium content: Being a critical nutrient, its content was determined.
• Net contents: The product content was verified to correspond to the declared content.
• Type of fat: Products labeled "cheese" were found to contain the characteristic fat of milk. Products labeled "imitation" were found to contain vegetable fat.
• Sanitary quality: It was evaluated that they did not contain microorganisms that cause deterioration in the product or harm to health.

In addition, the study recommends that consumers carefully check the label to identify whether it is a cheese or an imitation, since "Imitation" products should not be called "cheese" and often contain more fat, less protein, and in some cases, prohibited ingredients.
