"He was a humanitarian, an Olympian, and two-time heavyweight world champion. He was deeply respected—a force for good, a man of discipline, conviction, and a protector of his legacy, fighting tirelessly to preserve his good name—for his family," the Foreman family described in an Instagram post.
Foreman, whose professional career lasted from 1969 to 1997, was twice a world heavyweight champion, first from January 1973 to October 1974 and again—after having already retired from the sport once—from November 1994 to March and June 1995. At the time, he was already 45 years old. Foreman's last fight took place in 1997, ending his career with a record of 76 wins and five losses.
After his career as a boxer, Foreman made a name for himself as an entrepreneur, successfully selling barbecue grills named after him, earning millions of dollars.
Foreman was married four times in the 1970s and 1980s. In 1985, he married for the fifth time, to Mary Joan Martelly, with whom he remained for the rest of his life. He had five sons, all named George, five biological daughters, and two adopted daughters.
