Kate Middleton: The Princess of Wales shows how trendy polka dots are in spring 2025.
In 2023, Kate Middleton made headlines when she wore a figure-hugging, polka-dotted dress by Alessandra Rich, paired with Princess Diana's pearl earrings, to the Order of the Garter ceremony. An outfit that reminded some of Eliza Doolittle's black and white dress from "My Fair Lady"—the story of a young woman finding her way into the highest circles of the aristocracy.

Two years later, Princess Kate—or as British Vogue editor Emily Chan calls her, the "Queen of Rewears"—is wearing the exact same outfit again, this time to a service marking the 80th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe Day). Led by King Charles, Queen Camilla, and Prince William, Kate entered the Thanksgiving Mass at Westminster Abbey today in a much more solemn version of the once joyful outfit. Instead of white accessories, she wore a mourning fascinator (a small, decorative headpiece worn during mourning) by Shrewsbury milliner Juliette Botterill, brown pumps by Ralph Lauren, and DeMellier London's "The Nano Montreal" bag in a matching brown shade.

Much like her beloved skinny jeans, Kate's relationship with polka dots is currently experiencing a stylistic comeback on the runways. Proof: Connor Ives showed sheer slip dresses with large dots for Fall/Winter 2025, while they adorned 80s-style cocktail dresses at Valentino, and padded blazers at Moschino.

Back to the earrings: The pearl earrings given to Diana by jeweler Collingwood—consisting of two round diamonds at the top and three rows of smaller diamonds below—were famously worn by the then Princess of Wales upon her departure after her wedding to Prince Charles in 1981 and later with her legendary "revenge dress." Kate has since worn the earrings several times as a tribute to Diana, having been bequeathed to her in 2017. While reviving old heirlooms is a tradition in the royal family, Princess Kate seems determined to continue this practice with her own personal repertoire of reworn outfits.
