England World Cup squad LIVE: Maguire, Palmer and Foden AXED as Tuchel's big calls leaked
Southgate "not missing" having "horrendous conversations" as players cut

Former England manager Gareth Southgate said he was “not missing” having to tell players they were not part of the team, which he recalled were “some of the most horrendous conversations”.

Sir Gareth made his comments ahead of Thomas Tuchel naming his 26-man squad for this summer.

Referring to the calls being received by the players, Sir Gareth said: “They were some of the most horrendous conversations I ever had.

“So, basically, what I’m saying is I’m not missing any of this.”

He added: “I also will be giving the team space so I’m not doing media this summer, because I think anything I say will be amplified, thrown at Thomas and won’t help his job.

Fans left 'disgraced' by players cut from team

Fans have taken to social media to share their reactions to the leaked teams.

One user posted on X: "When you actually think about it, it’s a disgrace that Thomas Tuchel is England manager, a national embarrassment."

Another had a different view and said: "Everyone complaining? Am I the only me that thinks Tuchel is making all the right decisions? If you haven’t performed for your club, you’re not going. Simple."

John Cross: Thomas Tuchel's bold calls must now pay off for England boss

Thomas Tuchel has been brutal and ruthless with some huge calls for England’s World Cup squad.

The England boss dumped the likes of Phil Foden, Harry Maguire and Cole Palmer while brought back Ivan Toney after 12 months out in the wilderness in the Saudi Pro League.

These are massive decisions - and huge gambles. But this is a manager who has no time for reputations and cares even less about what other people think.

Read John Cross' full verdict on the selection decisions we've learned tonight here!

Predicted England squad

As we said earlier, we are not far away from getting the final numbers in terms of the England squad.

But our man John Cross has taken a stab at his predicted XI given what we've learned tonight:

  • GK - Pickford, Henderson, Trafford

Maguire's mum 'absolutely disgusted'

Harry Maguire's mum says that she's 'absolutely disgusted' by her son's omission from the England squad. Maguire, 33, has missed out on Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad which will be announced on Friday morning.

But news regarding the Manchester United star emerged on Thursday night and he soon confirmed his axe on social media amid outrage from fans who believe that he should've been called up. In a post on Instagram, Maguire commented: "I was confident I could of played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had.

"I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision. I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players, all the best this summer."

His mum, Zoe, didn't need nearly as many words to express her opinion. On X, she wrote: "Absolutely disgusted."

Squad update: Every player to miss out

Thomas Tuchel is having to make some brutal calls - and he's divding opinions.

These are the players that, to our knowledge, are expected to miss out.

  • Harry Maguire
  • Cole Palmer
  • Phil Foden
  • Levi Colwill
  • Luke Shaw
  • Trevoh Chalobah
  • Fikayo Tomori
  • Lewis Hall
  • Adam Wharton
  • Morgan Gibbs-White

Which players do you feel have been hard-done-by?

Gibbs-White latest 10 to miss out?

Morgan Gibbs-White is said to be the latest omission from the England squad.

The No 10 has enjoyed a fine season for Nottingham Forest. But it looks like it has not been enough to earn him a spot in Thomas Tuchel's squad...

Lewis-Skelly in with a shot

Myles Lewis-Skelly could also be a beneficiary of Lewis Hall and Luke Shaw's omissions.

The Arsenal star has recently come back into the fold under Mikel Arteta.

His versatility would be a plus.

Toney makes the cut

As we reported earlier in the blog - and back on May 11 - Ivan Toney IS heading to the World Cup after a change of heart from Thomas Tuchel.

It looks as though he, Ollie Watkins and Harry Kane will be England's three strikers...

No place for Hall?

This would be a real surprise given the news regarding Luke Shaw's omission.

It's being reported that Lewis Hall will also miss out.

Surely that's a boost to the chances of Newcastle team-mate Dan Burn, who can play at left-back as well as central defence.

Another Newcastle star, Tino Livramento, can do the same but he's a right-back by trade.

Madueke to get call over Bowen

BY JOHN CROSS

Thomas Tuchel is set to include Noni Madueke in his World Cup squad.

The Arsenal winger is believed to have got the nod ahead of Jarrod Bowen to go as back up for Bukayo Saka.

Luke Shaw and Fikayo Tomori are both set to miss out after not being upgraded from the initial 55 man squad to the final 26 man.

Toney waiting on call

Ivan Toney is hoping to make the final 26 man squad for the World Cup.

Mirror Sport revealed on May 11 that Thomas Tuchel had a dramatic change of heart on the ex-Brentford striker.

Toney, now playing in the Saudi Pro League, is hoping to be one of three strikers included in the 26 man squad. He has been in prolific form in Saudi Arabia, is a penalty specialist and has also been in a Tuchel squad previously as well as playing in the last Euros.

Foden, Shaw and Alexander-Arnold set to miss out

Thomas Tuchel began making phone calls 48 hours before he names his World Cup squad.

The England boss had the tough conversations first before he began phoning the 26 lucky ones to tell them they made the cut.

Ivan Toney is hoping to be one of the three strikers in the squad while Jordan Henderson, Levi Colwill and Ollie Watkins are hoping to make it.

Manchester City star Phil Foden is set to miss out and arguably be the biggest omission of all. Trent Alexander-Arnold is expected to be another casualty.

Fikayo Tomori has been told he will not be in and Luke Shaw is also not expected to be promoted from the initial 55 into the final 26-man squad.

'Gutted' Maguire releases statement

Manchester United star Harry Maguire has been left OUT of the England squad for the World Cup. Maguire, 33, says that he's 'gutted and shocked' by Thomas Tuchel's decision, which emerged on the eve of England's squad announcement on Friday.

The centre-back earned recall to the England squad in March, featuring in both of their friendlies. Maguire hadn't played for the Three Lions since September 2024.

Maguire posted on Instagram: "I was confident I could have played a major part this summer for my country after the season I've had. I've been left shocked and gutted by the decision.

"I've loved nothing more than putting that shirt on and representing my country over the years. I wish the players, all the best this summer."
