Attention Temu users! Duty-free shopping limit is being lifted

Turkey has taken action against China-based e-commerce giants like Temu and Shein. According to a report in Ekonomim, sources close to the AKP government stated that the complete removal of the 30 euro duty-free shopping limit is on the agenda. In this case, every product purchased from abroad will be subject to customs regulations. Under the new system, instead of a flat tax, customs duties will vary depending on the product type. In addition, there will be a 20 percent VAT, Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on some products, as well as additional costs such as customs presentation fees and stamp duty. This will make purchases over 30 euros more expensive and complex. Türkiye currently operates a simplified tax system for orders up to 30 euros. Products from EU countries are subject to a single customs duty of 30 percent, and those from outside the EU are subject to a 60 percent customs duty. However, if this limit is exceeded, the standard import duties will apply depending on the product type. This means that in addition to the customs duty, there will be additional costs such as 20 percent VAT, Special Consumption Tax (SCT) on some products, customs presentation fees, and stamp duty. In other words, for purchases over 30 euros, the process becomes more complicated and the total tax burden increases.
