Release of former AKP mayor on trial for bribery

On October 25, 2024, the Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court sentenced the detained defendants Beyoğlu and Kılıç to 3 years and 9 months in prison for the crime of “extortion by force”, and ruled to acquit former Bağlar Deputy Mayor Sıddık Aycıl because his actions were not proven.
The Chamber sent the file to the local court for the defendants to be retried, citing their conviction for the crime of “bribery.”
In the retrial at the Diyarbakır 10th High Criminal Court, the arrested defendants Beyoğlu and Kılıç were sentenced to 2 years and 11 months in prison for “attempting to receive a bribe”, while former Bağlar Deputy Mayor Sıddık Aycıl was acquitted because his actions were not proven.
Lawyers from the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Diyarbakır Chief Public Prosecutor's Office, and lawyers for the defendants and victims had applied to the 6th Criminal Chamber of the Diyarbakır Regional Court of Justice to appeal the decision.
According to Medyascope, the 6th Criminal Chamber, which evaluated the decision, found the local court's decision appropriate and ruled for the release of Beyoğlu and Kılıç, citing the time they had spent in detention, the fact that the arrest was not originally a punishment but a precautionary measure, and that it would not lead to a loss of rights in the future.
