Following the Muğla earthquake, Prof. Dr. Sözbilir warns of an 'earthquake storm'

According to the data of the Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency (AFAD), a magnitude 6 earthquake occurred in the Mediterranean at 01.51, with its epicenter 155.06 kilometers off the Datça district of Muğla. No adverse effects were experienced in the earthquake that occurred at a depth of 20.41 kilometers.

Izmir Dokuz Eylul University (DEU) Earthquake Research and Application Center (DAUM) Director and Geology Engineering Department Lecturer Prof. Dr. Hasan Sözbilir made an assessment of this earthquake in the Mediterranean.

"EARTHQUAKE STORM MAY DEVELOP"

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir, who stated that the earthquake occurred in the east of Crete Island, said, "In geological terms, it developed on the border of the African plate in the south and the Aegean-Anatolian plate in the north. This earthquake is important. In the past, there have been earthquakes of magnitude 7 to 8 here. This latest earthquake, which occurred with a magnitude of 6, occurred at a point far from Türkiye. For this reason, it was felt in Muğla and its surroundings in terms of vibration. It should not have a destructive effect. Since the earthquakes that occurred on this line come to the plate boundary fault, there is a volcanic arc right in front of it. Earthquakes occurred in Santorini in January and February. Volcanic activity was mentioned here. The Santorini earthquakes had stopped a while ago. A magnitude 6 earthquake occurred on the plate boundary. This is a place where the African plate slides under our Anatolian plate. It could cause the Santorini earthquake to start again. An earthquake storm could develop."

Prof. Dr. Sözbilir, who drew attention to the fact that there was a devastating earthquake near Santorini Island in 1950, said, "That big earthquake did not have an effect in Türkiye. The earthquake on Santorini Island does not have much effect on us. However, that earthquake that occurred off the coast of Datça yesterday is affecting our southern coasts. It has caused tsunamis in the past. An earthquake over a magnitude of 7.5 has created a tsunami. It can also have a devastating effect on areas where buildings are not solid."
