Why is the flu lasting longer this year?

Child Health and Diseases Specialist Dr. Şirin Seçkin said, "One of the reasons why it takes longer to recover from flu and other respiratory infections this year is the possibility of coinfection involving two viruses at the same time. Multiple viruses such as RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) or Rhinovirus that overlap with flu or COVID-19 can delay recovery. On the other hand, many people have had flu repeatedly this year. Sinusitis, a common flu complication, can cause chronic cough, sputum production, nasal congestion and headaches, which can delay recovery for weeks. Another factor is the increase in the number of people who have not received the flu vaccine this year. As a result of weakening herd immunity, illness periods may last longer."
