"WE SEE LESIONS IN THE BRAIN AND SPINAL CORD"

Neurology Specialist Dr. Yeşim Eylev Akboğa, of Sincan Training and Research Hospital in Ankara, stated that a 40-year-old MS patient initially complained of numbness in the left half of her face, left arm, and left leg when she first presented, and that when she bent her head forward, she experienced numbness and an electric sensation radiating from her neck to her back.

Akboğa explained, "Due to these complaints, we requested brain and spinal cord imaging. Detailed blood tests were performed. I re-evaluated the patient based on the results. When we looked at the results, we saw lesions on the patient's brain and spinal cord. In Multiple Sclerosis (MS), commonly known as MS, we see demyelinating lesions in the brain and spinal cord. These lesions are actually the result of damage caused by the person's own immune system attacking the myelin sheaths on neurons."

Akboğa explained that they began the treatment process after the diagnosis was made, saying, "We decided on treatment after discussing it with the patient. There are many different treatments available for Multiple Sclerosis today. These can include oral tablets, injections, or intravenous treatment. We started the patient on tablets. He takes the tablets twice a day. His symptoms have now significantly improved."

"A COMMON DISEASE IN YOUNG ADULTS"

Akboğa, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis, said, "Early diagnosis and prognosis are crucial in multiple sclerosis. In patients diagnosed early and treated early, we see less clinical deterioration and a lower rate of disability. Multiple sclerosis is a common disease in young adults between the ages of 20 and 40. However, it can occur in any age group. Because this age group is socially and professionally active, it can also negatively impact their professional lives."

"I COULDN'T FEEL MY FACE AROUND AT ALL"

Sedat Acı, who stated that he has had MS for about a year and a half, came to the hospital after experiencing symptoms and was diagnosed with MS. Acı explained that he initially didn't know what his condition was, saying, "Because I didn't know, I thought it was a normal disease. But I later learned that MS is a serious illness, to be honest. But thanks to the techniques and medications we received from our doctor, and the information he provided, I haven't had any problems until now. I've been suffering from MS for a year and a half now. When I first started, it was very bad. I couldn't feel my left side. Especially my face, I couldn't feel anything around me at all. I also had tingling in my arms, hands, and feet. I'm in very good shape now."

"I HAVE SEEN IMPROVEMENTS AFTER TREATMENTS"

Explaining that the symptoms that emerged before she went to the doctor affected her social life, Acı said, "If you tried to hold something, you couldn't. I mean, if I lifted something, I couldn't. If I held my hand like that, the numbness in my arm would get worse. I couldn't enjoy eating or taste anything around my face. My left side wasn't entirely mine. Frankly, I felt like a paraplegic. After the treatments, I improved. I'm very happy now. I can go about my normal routine now."

Acı, who stated that he learned that he had the same disease as Serdar Ortaç, said, "Later, they told me it was 'Serdar Ortaç's disease.' I know Serdar Ortaç, but I didn't know there was such a disease. I did some research later. I saw that it was a very troubling disease."
