Excessive coffee impairs memory

Adnan Menderes University (ADU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Cardiology Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Ceyhan issued important warnings regarding the consumption of coffee and energy drinks, which are especially common among students.

Prof. Dr. Ceyhan said that caffeine strengthens attention and memory when consumed in the right amount, but when consumed excessively, it disrupts sleep patterns and negatively affects learning.

Ceyhan noted that tea, coffee and energy drinks are consumed extensively today, especially by young people and students, and drew attention to the effects of caffeine on the body.

Emphasizing that caffeine increases concentration and clarifies the mind, Ceyhan stated that consumption should be limited to see the benefits.

Prof. Dr. Ceyhan said, "Caffeine reduces distraction and supports mental performance. However, it's important not to exceed 300-400 milligrams per day, or 3-4 cups of coffee. One or two cups of coffee in the morning is especially beneficial for students."

Prof. Dr. Ceyhun Ceyhan, who also touched upon the negative effects of excessive caffeine consumption, said, "Excessive amounts of coffee cause insomnia, tension and anxiety.
