Prosecutor's Office challenges JC Chávez Jr.'s parole

The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (Femdo) filed an appeal against the court ruling that granted Julio César Chávez Jr. conditional release from the criminal proceedings in which he is accused of being allegedly responsible for organized crime and arms and ammunition trafficking.

The appeal will be referred to a court to challenge the ruling by Judge Enrique Hernández Miranda on August 23, which ordered the precautionary measure of conditional release.

Judge Hernández Miranda granted him this benefit despite the fact that the second paragraph of Article 19 of the Constitution establishes that organized crime cases warrant pretrial detention and that it must be applied literally, without any room for interpretation, according to ministry sources who attended the hearing.

The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office therefore appealed the ruling, citing among the grievances the judge based his ruling on the fact that Chávez Jr. "had a permanent residence in the country, in Culiacán," even though he was detained in the United States and was applying for residency.

During the hearing for the prosecution, the Attorney General's Office presented 21 pieces of evidence that directly mention him and establish that the boxer beat those held captive by the Los Chapitos faction—led by Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar—who were rivals of the Sinaloa cartel or had disobeyed an order from its leaders.

Diablos Rojos del México lost the first game of the Southern Zone Championship to Piratas de Campeche at the Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium. The team made several defensive errors that cost them a 4-2 defeat.

The Pirates had a magnificent day on the pitching mound, and with a home run, they left the Pingos without arguments to take a 1-0 lead in the series where the regional champion will be the one who wins four of seven games.

The Campeche squad's pitching held off the Colorados, who went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base, three of them in the first inning when they left the bases loaded.

Starting pitcher Domingo Acevedo pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits , two walks, and three strikeouts. The bullpen sent out five pitchers who worked one inning each, allowing only three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.

Comeback

The game was an intense duel between pitchers, and the Devils were the first to score yesterday afternoon. In the first inning, a single by Robinson Canó drove in Allen Córdoba's run. Campeche responded immediately, scoring twice in the fourth inning. The Reds were undeterred, and Rio Ruiz's solo home run tied the game at 2-2.

The go-ahead runs came on a sacrifice fly by Cal Mitchell in the fifth inning; in the seventh, a fielding error by Julián Ornelas, after colliding with center fielder Allen Córdoba while chasing a popup, allowed the Pirates to score.

The Devils got at least one baserunner on base from the fifth through the ninth innings, but couldn't get past second base, including a double play in the final inning. With this loss, Mexico also lost its consecutive playoff winning streak and remains at 16 victories.

For the Devils, the starting pitcher was Ricardo Pinto, who pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only two hits, one of them a two-run home run, with three runs allowed, four walks, and seven strikeouts. Five pitchers came in for the relief pitcher, who covered 4.2 innings , allowing three hits , one run, and three strikeouts.

The winning pitcher was Tyler Thomas in relief, with Ricardo Pinto taking the loss. Zac Rosscup earned the save by recording the final three outs of the game.

Now, the Diablos will try to tie the series this Sunday at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium starting at 2 p.m., where the capital team will have Brooks Hall as their starting pitcher and the Pirates will send Jake Thompson.

New York, Jannik Sinner broke serve for the first time at the US Open. He even lost the first set and fell far behind in the third.

“I'm not a machine, you know,” he said with a slight smile. “Sometimes it's hard for me, too.”

Still, Sinner is the world number one in men's tennis and has won the last three Grand Slams played on hard courts, so it was no surprise when he overcame a few mistakes and beat number 27 Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to take his title defense at Flushing Meadows to the fourth round.

Sinner's latest triumph extended her unbeaten streak on major hard courts to 24 matches, spanning the 2024 US Open and the 2024 and 2025 Australian Open championships.

“We were in a one-on-one. It was a very close match. A lot of games were very close,” said Shapovalov, a Canadian left-hander who was a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2021. “He’s number one for a reason. He handled it very well. He wrestles wonderfully. He did a tremendous job coming back from 3-0 down in the third set.”

For the first time at this US Open, Coco Gauff didn't double fault in her opening game and wasn't broken early on.

The No. 3 seed delivered her strongest performance yet yesterday, defeating Poland's Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a tournament she won in 2023.

“It’s been a very emotional week, but I think I needed those tough moments to keep me going,” said Gauff, who will face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka tomorrow for a spot in the quarterfinals.

World number two Iga Swiatek struggled in the first set but ultimately won 7-6, 7-4 over Anna Kalinskaya. The Pole will next face Yekaterina Aleksandrova in the round of 16.

Santiago González falls

Mexican Santiago González was eliminated in the first round of doubles along with his partner Austin Krajicek.

The Cordoban and the American fell to Machi González and Andrés Molteni with scores of 6-1 and 6-4.

With Santiago's defeat, Mexico is left with two representatives in the pairs category: Renata Zarazúa and Giuliana Olmos.

Zandvoort. After three months without a pole , Oscar Piastri took pole position for the Formula One Dutch Grand Prix. The Australian driver found a new rhythm to edge out his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in qualifying yesterday by just over one-hundredth of a second.

Piastri set the pace at the start of the final part of qualifying for the race and Norris was unable to match him, falling 0.012 seconds off the pace as the title battle between the two McLaren teammates intensifies.

It was the Australian's fifth pole of the year, but his first since the Spanish Grand Prix, six races ago.

Norris, who won the Dutch Grand Prix last year and was fastest in all three practice sessions this week, said starting second was “not the end of the world,” and suggested small changes in the wind could have decided the outcome.

Piastri has nine points more than Norris in the drivers' standings with 10 races remaining in the season. Norris has closed the gap in recent months with wins in three of the last four races.

Defending champion Max Verstappen is set to start third at his home race. And although he's third in the standings, the 97-point gap to Piastri means his title chances are slim.

Isack Hadjar was a surprise fourth for Racing Bulls, the best qualifying result of his career for the French rookie, who is considered a candidate for a promotion to Red Bull next season as Verstappen's teammate.

George Russell is fifth for Mercedes, while Charles Leclerc will start sixth again, having qualified ahead of his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was seventh.

Yuki Tsunoda, who is filling the seat vacated by Sergio Perez, finished 12th, a result that does nothing to help his efforts to prove he can stay at Red Bull for next season.
