In a high-intensity match, León managed to show their mettle and extend their good run in the 2025 Apertura tournament of the Liga MX Femenil after defeating Cruz Azul 2-1 in the ninth matchday match yesterday at La Noria stadium.
The goals for La Fiera, who have gone four matches unbeaten and two consecutive wins, came from Jamaican Trudi Carter in the 56th minute and Luciana García in the 62nd.
For La Máquina, which broke a streak of four games without losing, the American Aerial Chavarín discounted in the 72nd minute.
Thanks to this victory, the Esmeraldas moved into eighth place in the overall standings, with 15 points. The cement companies, meanwhile, secured 11 points and remained in 11th place.
Both teams took to the field aiming to open the scoring in the opening minutes; however, the momentum shown by the players proved counterproductive, as the game became rough and numerous fouls were committed, resulting in a tight duel in midfield.
Despite creating some dangerous plays, neither side was able to score before heading into the locker room.
In the second half, neither team slowed down, and León came close to scoring in the opening minutes with a long-range shot from Chilean Fernanda Pinilla, but the ball failed to penetrate the cement workers' goal.
With the lack of goals, both coaches made changes to their lineups in an effort to give their teams more dynamism and break the scoreless tie.
In the 51st minute, the Celeste coach, Diego Testas, sent Jamaican Deneisha Blackwood and Daniela Calderón onto the field, replacing Yaneisy Rodríguez and Uruguayan Solange Lemos, respectively.
For his part, León's strategist, Alejandro Corona, replaced Itzell Alemán with Trudi Carter at 56.
The changes took immediate effect, as just moments later, the visitors took the lead with a goal from newly substituted Carter, who, after receiving a cross in the box, shot straight at the goal guarded by Alejandría Godínez to slot the ball in from the left flank and make it 1-0.
The goal motivated the Emeralds, who quickly extended their lead. In the 62nd minute, in a move very similar to the one that led to the first goal, Luciana García connected with the ball in the six-yard box and, without hesitation, fired a powerful shot into the back of the net to make it 2-0.
The wide disadvantage caused the sky-blues to go all out on the attack and they managed to reduce the deficit on the scoreboard in the 72nd minute through Aerial Chavarín, who, after a shot from her teammate Danya Gutiérrez, took advantage of a rebound from the emerald goalkeeper, Natalia Acuña, which was very close to the goal, to surprise with a counterattack and make it 2-1.
In the final stretch of the match, the home team tried to salvage at least a draw to earn a point, but the feline defense managed to hold off their attacks and ultimately claim the valuable victory.
Matchday nine continues today with Chivas-Tigres, Puebla-Atlético San Luis, Toluca-Querétaro, and Pachuca-América.

Raúl Jiménez reached 200 appearances in the English Premier League. More than just a number of appearances, the Fulham striker made history. He became the Mexican player with the most appearances in English football, with twice as many minutes (14,704) as Javier Hernández during his time at Manchester United and West Ham.
A youth player at América, Jiménez came on in the 59th minute of his team's 2-0 loss to Chelsea yesterday, setting a record that's difficult for current national team forwards to match in Europe. Compared to Chicharito , who totaled 158 appearances and played his last league game in the 2019-20 season, he already has a 32-match advantage.
In the Premier League, Jiménez has played for Wolverhampton and Fulham, where he regained his best form. Behind him and Chicharito Hernández, Edson Álvarez is the Mexican with the third most Premier League appearances, having played 59 matches and 4,165 minutes.
Luck, however, was not on their side on their visit to Stamford Bridge. Joao Pedro (45+9) and Enzo Fernández (56, from a penalty) scored the goals that gave Chelsea the victory. Fulham sits in 16th place in the English league with just two points out of a possible nine, while the Blues remain top of the table with seven points.
Quiñones scores his first goal for Al-Qadisiya
In the Saudi Arabian League, Colombian-Mexican Julián Quiñones scored his first goal of the season and led Al-Qadisiya to a 3-1 victory over Al-Najma in the opening matchday.
The former América, Atlas, and Tigres striker received an assist from Uruguayan Nahitan Nández, who broke down the right flank and shot inside the six-yard box just wide of the opposing goalkeeper. Quiñones was not selected by national team coach Javier Aguirre for the friendlies against Japan and South Korea on the FIFA World Cup in September.
Police, complicit in the "organizational failure" of the match between Independiente and U de Chile

Images of the August 20 match spread around the world: a clash between the hooligans of Club Atlético Independiente and fans of the U de Chile team, in which the Chileans threw rocks and toilets, while the Argentines, with the complicity of the police, launched an ultraviolent attack on the visiting fans.
The way the fans were organized was doomed to failure since both the home club and the South American Football Confederation (CONMEBOL) agreed to place opposing fans on top of each other, without protection or security. The match was canceled, but in that context, without the minimum standards for public safety, it should never have started.
That same night, Club President Néstor Grindetti issued statements demanding they advance to the next phase and holding the University of Chile responsible for everything that happened. On both sides of the Andes, this was seen as a clear lack of human sensitivity.
There is more than one political correlation that helps explain the level of violence perpetrated by the hooligans. The clashes lasted for hours, but the legal case will take months, at least. The chronological reconstruction of the events reveals the police's connivance, which allowed the Independiente hooligans to leave their stadium, the Libertadores de América. This is one of the many situations that had to come together for what happened to happen: the security of the match was compromised long before the referee blew his whistle to start the match.
It's not just what Chilean President Gabriel Boric rightly called an "organizational failure"; a loyal relationship with the police force is considered a total offense in football folklore.
Institutional crisis
Fans claim that Independiente was co-opted many years ago by different political factions and say this is what led the club to a state of permanent crisis. These include former president Hugo Moyano, a renowned union leader from the truck drivers' union, associated with Peronism, or his opponent and current club boss, Néstor Grindetti, a leader of the opposition party known as PRO. The general consensus is that both factions treated the club like a business and harmed Club Atlético Independiente.
The other political context in which the tragic violence of what happened is embedded has to do with the upcoming gubernatorial elections in the province of Buenos Aires, an area that includes Avellaneda, the city where the match was partially played.
It wouldn't be the first time this type of situation has been tied to disputes that go beyond football to the point of the unthinkable: in an electoral context, the stadium acts as a magnifying glass. One theory regarding the incidents highlights that they occurred on the same day that a new scandal erupted in the Javier Milei administration, involving leaked phone calls and exposing a case of corruption linked to the withdrawal of state funding for people with disabilities.
Restricted image
Filming of these events is for the exclusive use of the sports channels that broadcast the matches, but in the context of what happened, the restriction serves as a media shield for CONMEBOL. In the end, the crowd records provided crucial information about what happened in Avellaneda: it wasn't just the hooligans, but also ordinary fans and those occupying the Independiente stands who incited the clashes in the stands.
Violence in recent football competitions organized by CONMEBOL is recurrent. The matches are approved by the association, although they then disclaim any responsibility for any incidents. The most memorable avoidable disaster of recent times occurred when the Argentine national team went to play against Brazil in November 2023, and the crowd arrangement at the Maracanã Stadium mixed the two sets of fans in the same stand, an avoidable error that resulted in police repression against the visiting crowd.
Prosecutor's Office challenges JC Chávez Jr.'s parole

The Specialized Prosecutor's Office for Organized Crime (Femdo) filed an appeal against the court ruling that granted Julio César Chávez Jr. conditional release from the criminal proceedings in which he is accused of being allegedly responsible for organized crime and arms and ammunition trafficking.
The appeal will be referred to a court to challenge the ruling by Judge Enrique Hernández Miranda on August 23, which ordered the precautionary measure of conditional release.
Judge Hernández Miranda granted him this benefit despite the fact that the second paragraph of Article 19 of the Constitution establishes that organized crime cases warrant pretrial detention and that it must be applied literally, without any room for interpretation, according to ministry sources who attended the hearing.
The Federal Public Prosecutor's Office therefore appealed the ruling, citing among the grievances the judge based his ruling on the fact that Chávez Jr. "had a permanent residence in the country, in Culiacán," even though he was detained in the United States and was applying for residency.
During the hearing for the prosecution, the Attorney General's Office presented 21 pieces of evidence that directly mention him and establish that the boxer beat those held captive by the Los Chapitos faction—led by Iván Archivaldo Guzmán Salazar—who were rivals of the Sinaloa cartel or had disobeyed an order from its leaders.

Diablos Rojos del México lost the first game of the Southern Zone Championship to Piratas de Campeche at the Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium. The team made several defensive errors that cost them a 4-2 defeat.
The Pirates had a magnificent day on the pitching mound, and with a home run, they left the Pingos without arguments to take a 1-0 lead in the series where the regional champion will be the one who wins four of seven games.
The Campeche squad's pitching held off the Colorados, who went 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position, leaving nine runners on base, three of them in the first inning when they left the bases loaded.
Starting pitcher Domingo Acevedo pitched four innings, allowing two runs on five hits , two walks, and three strikeouts. The bullpen sent out five pitchers who worked one inning each, allowing only three hits, two walks, and two strikeouts.
Comeback
The game was an intense duel between pitchers, and the Devils were the first to score yesterday afternoon. In the first inning, a single by Robinson Canó drove in Allen Córdoba's run. Campeche responded immediately, scoring twice in the fourth inning. The Reds were undeterred, and Rio Ruiz's solo home run tied the game at 2-2.
The go-ahead runs came on a sacrifice fly by Cal Mitchell in the fifth inning; in the seventh, a fielding error by Julián Ornelas, after colliding with center fielder Allen Córdoba while chasing a popup, allowed the Pirates to score.
The Devils got at least one baserunner on base from the fifth through the ninth innings, but couldn't get past second base, including a double play in the final inning. With this loss, Mexico also lost its consecutive playoff winning streak and remains at 16 victories.
For the Devils, the starting pitcher was Ricardo Pinto, who pitched 4.1 innings, allowing only two hits, one of them a two-run home run, with three runs allowed, four walks, and seven strikeouts. Five pitchers came in for the relief pitcher, who covered 4.2 innings , allowing three hits , one run, and three strikeouts.
The winning pitcher was Tyler Thomas in relief, with Ricardo Pinto taking the loss. Zac Rosscup earned the save by recording the final three outs of the game.
Now, the Diablos will try to tie the series this Sunday at Alfredo Harp Helú Stadium starting at 2 p.m., where the capital team will have Brooks Hall as their starting pitcher and the Pirates will send Jake Thompson.
Sinner and Swiatek continue winning at the US Open

New York, Jannik Sinner broke serve for the first time at the US Open. He even lost the first set and fell far behind in the third.
“I'm not a machine, you know,” he said with a slight smile. “Sometimes it's hard for me, too.”
Still, Sinner is the world number one in men's tennis and has won the last three Grand Slams played on hard courts, so it was no surprise when he overcame a few mistakes and beat number 27 Denis Shapovalov 5-7, 6-4, 6-3, 6-3 to take his title defense at Flushing Meadows to the fourth round.
Sinner's latest triumph extended her unbeaten streak on major hard courts to 24 matches, spanning the 2024 US Open and the 2024 and 2025 Australian Open championships.
“We were in a one-on-one. It was a very close match. A lot of games were very close,” said Shapovalov, a Canadian left-hander who was a Wimbledon semifinalist in 2021. “He’s number one for a reason. He handled it very well. He wrestles wonderfully. He did a tremendous job coming back from 3-0 down in the third set.”
For the first time at this US Open, Coco Gauff didn't double fault in her opening game and wasn't broken early on.
The No. 3 seed delivered her strongest performance yet yesterday, defeating Poland's Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1 to reach the fourth round of a tournament she won in 2023.
“It’s been a very emotional week, but I think I needed those tough moments to keep me going,” said Gauff, who will face four-time Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka tomorrow for a spot in the quarterfinals.
World number two Iga Swiatek struggled in the first set but ultimately won 7-6, 7-4 over Anna Kalinskaya. The Pole will next face Yekaterina Aleksandrova in the round of 16.
Santiago González falls
Mexican Santiago González was eliminated in the first round of doubles along with his partner Austin Krajicek.
The Cordoban and the American fell to Machi González and Andrés Molteni with scores of 6-1 and 6-4.
With Santiago's defeat, Mexico is left with two representatives in the pairs category: Renata Zarazúa and Giuliana Olmos.
Piastri takes pole at the Dutch GP

Zandvoort. After three months without a pole , Oscar Piastri took pole position for the Formula One Dutch Grand Prix. The Australian driver found a new rhythm to edge out his McLaren teammate Lando Norris in qualifying yesterday by just over one-hundredth of a second.
Piastri set the pace at the start of the final part of qualifying for the race and Norris was unable to match him, falling 0.012 seconds off the pace as the title battle between the two McLaren teammates intensifies.
It was the Australian's fifth pole of the year, but his first since the Spanish Grand Prix, six races ago.
Norris, who won the Dutch Grand Prix last year and was fastest in all three practice sessions this week, said starting second was “not the end of the world,” and suggested small changes in the wind could have decided the outcome.
Piastri has nine points more than Norris in the drivers' standings with 10 races remaining in the season. Norris has closed the gap in recent months with wins in three of the last four races.
Defending champion Max Verstappen is set to start third at his home race. And although he's third in the standings, the 97-point gap to Piastri means his title chances are slim.
Isack Hadjar was a surprise fourth for Racing Bulls, the best qualifying result of his career for the French rookie, who is considered a candidate for a promotion to Red Bull next season as Verstappen's teammate.
George Russell is fifth for Mercedes, while Charles Leclerc will start sixth again, having qualified ahead of his Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton, who was seventh.
Yuki Tsunoda, who is filling the seat vacated by Sergio Perez, finished 12th, a result that does nothing to help his efforts to prove he can stay at Red Bull for next season.
