Chinese manufacturer Hithium reaches agreement to develop its batteries in the Basque Country.
Within the framework of the "The Smarter E Europe" trade fair in Munich, the Basque Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Hithium, one of the world's leading stationary battery companies. This agreement represents a fundamental milestone in consolidating the Basque Country as a European leader in the stationary energy storage industry.
The agreement, the result of close collaboration between both parties, encompasses three strategic pillars: technological collaboration, the active participation of Basque companies in project development, and the promotion of circularity in manufacturing. The shared objective is to develop a comprehensive solution that enables the manufacture of stationary storage systems in the Basque Country, in collaboration with a leading industrial partner and with the support of Basque technology centers.
This alliance represents a decisive step in the strategy of locating production and innovation capacity in Europe, making the Basque Country not only a commercial hub but also Hithium's manufacturing and operations base in the south of the continent. This will allow production and distribution to other European markets to be coordinated from the Basque Country, consolidating its role as a strategic hub for Europe.
As the penetration of wind and solar energy increases in Europe, the need for advanced energy storage solutions that offer flexibility and guarantee grid stability is growing. In this context, the Basque Government considers it strategic not only to promote the industrialization of the energy transition but also to actively contribute to reducing emissions through efficient and sustainable storage technologies. Stationary batteries are included in the Basque Clean Technologies List and are therefore subject to a 35% tax deduction.
In this way, the Basque Government reaffirms its commitment to a sustainable energy transition, promoting the development of a more competitive, efficient, and low-emission industry. This collaboration with Hithium reflects the Basque Country's commitment to a more efficient and sustainable industry, under the motto: "more industry, better industry, fewer emissions."
Manufacturing of stationary batteries in the Basque CountryThe Minister of Industry, Energy Transition, and Sustainability, Mikel Jauregi, presented the agreement this morning during the plenary session of the Basque Parliament. "Investment in electrical infrastructure in the Basque Country is both a necessity and an opportunity. Among other reasons, because we have leading global producers of electrical goods and equipment."
"Since I came to power, I've insisted on the need to invest in the electricity grid and develop more renewable energy. If these sources have a drawback, it's precisely their volatility. Since the power outage, this reality has become even more evident. That's why storage is our priority," Jauregi emphasized.
"The Basque Government has been working on stationary energy storage for some time. We're not just talking about installing batteries; we want to manufacture them. We want storage systems for Europe to be manufactured in our country, in collaboration with our technology centers and our industry. We suffered a power outage that showed us how vulnerable we are. It also highlighted the strengths we have to take advantage of this industrial opportunity, and the agreement with Hithium is the result of them," the minister concluded.
Founded in 2019 and headquartered in Xiamen, China, Hithium is one of the leading global players in energy storage. Its international expansion has been significant, with a presence in the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Turkey, Dubai, Singapore, Australia, and other countries. With this collaboration, Hithium advances its commitment to locating production and innovation capabilities in Europe to offer optimized solutions and comply with European technical standards.
