Nowadays there is a bad habit of carrying your cell phone everywhere, even to the bathroom. Although for many people it's a welcome distraction during this time, they may not be aware of the dangers this activity could pose.

Why should you stop doing it?

Microbiologist Charles Gerba told ClikiSalud that bathrooms are teeming with enteric bacteria from the intestinal tracts of people who defecate in these spaces.

The areas most contaminated by these bacteria are the doorknob, the sink, the toilet, and the floors. So, by touching any of these surfaces, your phone automatically becomes contaminated, so you'll carry those germs with you to other areas of your home.

This will significantly increase the risk of infection because, in addition to transferring the batteries to your hands, you can also transfer them to your face or mouth when you touch them.

It is almost a given that cell phones are a major source of viruses and bacteria. According to a study by the University of Arizona, 90% of cell phones used by students and volunteers were contaminated with potentially dangerous bacteria, and 16% of them contained fecal matter, posing a significant health risk.

Some of the illnesses that may arise are: hepatitis, gastroenteritis and norovirus.

On the other hand, taking your cell phone into the bathroom can cause other problems. One of them is that cell phones distract us to such an extent that we lose track of time, so many can spend a long time in the bathroom without realizing it.

According to specialists, it's best not to spend more than 10 minutes sitting on the toilet to avoid problems like hemorrhoids.
