Inflation rises in April

MEXICO CITY (EFE).— Mexico's inflation rate rose to 3.93% in April , marking three consecutive months of increases, driven primarily by rising food prices, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported.
The April figure exceeded the 3.8% recorded in March and the 3.77% recorded in February, when the index had reversed a three-month downward trend.
Inegi also reported that the consumer price index ( CPI ) increased by 0.33% during the month.
In the same period in 2024, monthly inflation was 0.20% and the annual rate reached 4.65%. The core price index, which excludes highly volatile goods, rose 0.49% monthly and 3.93% annually, the institute stated.
Within this index, merchandise prices increased 0.69% for the month and 3.38% for the year, while services grew 0.3% monthly and 4.56% annually. In contrast, the non-core index fell 0.21% in April, although it showed a year-over-year increase of 3.76%.
Among non-core products, agricultural prices rose 1.60% monthly and 4.13% annually. Meanwhile, energy prices and government-authorized tariffs fell 1.59% in the month, but posted a 2.99% increase for the year.
The price index for the basic consumer basket , comprising 176 products and services, increased by 0.22% in April and 3.69% annually.
The sectors with the largest annual increases were restaurants and hotels (7.22%), education (5.86%), and transportation (4.88%). Among the products that saw the largest price increases were tomatoes (22.08%), avocados (10.90%), and skin creams (5.33%).
