The deadline for children and grandchildren of exiles to apply for Spanish nationality has expired.

This Wednesday marks the deadline for the children and grandchildren of Spaniards who went into exile during the Civil War and the Franco regime to apply for Spanish nationality, as permitted by the 2022 Democratic Memory Law .
This law grants the right to apply for Spanish nationality to the children and grandchildren of Spaniards who lost it as a result of exile, but also to the children of Spanish women who renounced it upon marriage, and to the adult children of those who were already granted nationality under the Historical Memory Law of 2007.
A two-year deadline was set for formalizing applications from the entry into force of the 2022 Democratic Memory Law, but a one-year extension was subsequently established, which ends this Wednesday.
The Minister of Territorial Policy and Democratic Memory, Ángel Víctor Torres, said in early October during a visit to Argentina and Chile that nearly one million people have visited Spanish consulates to officially apply for Spanish nationality, according to official data from July 31.
Pending more updated data, the minister indicated at another event held last September in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria that the Spanish government had granted some 237,145 nationalities to date with applications received since 2022, most of them submitted in Argentina and Cuba .
