Former crew member reveals what black rings on cruises really mean

Lucy Southerton from Birmingham spent ten years working on cruise ships – and in doing so, she not only got to know the world better, but also her passengers.

In a YouTube video that has now had over a million views, she reports on a curious secret code on the high seas: According to Southerton, black rings and pineapple jewelry serve as identifying marks within the swinger community.

As she explained to the Daily Mail , she first learned about it when a couple wore pineapple necklaces during a massage in the ship's spa. When she commented on the jewelry as "cute," the two laughingly replied, " We're swingers—that's how you'll recognize us ."

According to Southerton, although this code isn't officially recognized by shipping companies, it's well-known within the swinger scene. However, she warns against jumping to conclusions: A black ring on the right hand could simply be a fashion statement.

As he continued talking with the couple, Southerton learned more terms and symbols:

• “Unicorn”: A woman traveling alone who is open to sexual contact with a couple – considered rare and desirable in the scene.
• “Rhino”: A man traveling alone who is open to sexual encounters with couples or individuals.
• “Mermaid”: A married woman who seeks sexual contact with other couples without her partner.
• “Rainbow”: Represents people who are open to sexual contact with all genders and constellations.
