|In a long, disjointed opening match against Poland, the German women's team only improved in the second half – and won 2-0. But the spotlight shifted to captain Giulia Gwinn, who injured her knee and had to be substituted early.
Just over five minutes remained in the first half when something happened that absolutely shouldn't have happened: Giulia Gwinn collapsed to the ground. The captain of the German national team had tears in her eyes; she couldn't take it anymore. Lea Schüller and Janina Minge ran to her, and goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger was also quick to respond. Everyone seemed to be thinking the same thing: Not her knee! Not Gwinn!
