This is a bitter news for SGS Essen and the Austrian national team: Lilli Purtscheller tore her cruciate ligament during training. Her club announced this on Friday evening. She underwent immediate surgery, but will likely not be back on the pitch until the second half of next season at the earliest.

Purtscheller already had a cruciate ligament tear in 2022

The 21-year-old made 20 appearances for Essen in the Bundesliga last season. She scored two goals and provided another assist. She also played six times for the Austrian national team and scored one goal for the Austrian national team. Austria will not be competing at the European Championships in Switzerland.

This is the midfielder's second cruciate ligament tear in her young career. She already tore it in 2022, when she was still playing for Sturm Graz.
