Google may be in trouble because of artificial intelligence

Google AI Reviews are AI-generated summaries that appear above traditional hyperlinks to relevant websites and are displayed to users in more than 100 countries. They began adding ads to them in May last year , Reuters explains.

Google has been prioritizing AI integration with search, but the move has raised concerns among some content providers, mainly publishers , Reuters reported.

The Independent Publishers Alliance's June 30 filing contains a complaint to the European Commission accusing Google of abusing its market position in online search .

"Google's core search service misuses web content for Google AI reviews in Google Search, which has caused and continues to cause significant harm to publishers in the form of lost traffic, readership, and revenue," the document, seen by Reuters, said.

The complaint states that Google places its AI Overviews at the top of the general search results page and displays its own summaries generated using publisher content . It alleges that Google is biased in this way against publishers’ original content.

" Publishers using Google Search have no option to opt out of having their content downloaded for Google AI training and/or indexed for summary purposes without losing their ability to appear on Google's general search results page," the complaint said.

Google said it sends billions of clicks to websites every day. "New AI experiences in Search enable people to ask even more questions, creating new opportunities to discover content and businesses," a Google spokesperson told Reuters.
