Forget denim trends! I'll be wearing these '90s jeans all fall long.

While watching Darren Aronofsky's new film, "Caught Stealing," in the theater, I found myself completely ignoring the plot and focusing almost exclusively on the jeans . The film is set in the late '90s, and the costumes showcase the jeans just right: Zoë Kravitz and Austin Butler stroll through Brooklyn in straight-cut, mid-rise, belted Levi's. "This was before low-waisted jeans came along," costume designer Amy Westcott tells The Cut.
Zoë and Austin look so good in this film it's almost painful to look at. But all of this got me thinking about why today's version of '90s style often doesn't quite look like the stars of that era. It's probably because the jeans have a modern cut or fabric. True '90s jeans were stiff, durable, and mid-rise. Low-rise jeans came later; they took a while to enter the mainstream, after Alexander McQueen introduced them to the fashion lexicon with his Spring/Summer 1995 collection (Levi's then launched its superlow silhouette in 2001). So, what that means is: people back then often wore mid-rise jeans paired with boots or sneakers.
After watching the film, I immediately went home to search the internet for a pair of vintage '90s Levi's 501s—straight-leg, loose on the hips, but not too loose. However, I'm not the only one who swears by a pair of pre-millennium Levi's. "I'm always on the hunt for the perfect pair of jeans ," wrote Alexa Chung in British Vogue. "Among my favorites are the vintage Levi's 517s, and I jump on them whenever a pair pops up." Just last week, Harry Styles was photographed wearing a pair that would have worked well in "Caught Stealing"—a sturdy, blue, possibly vintage mid-rise pair.

Fortunately, vintage Levi's are exceptionally easy to come by. And while the brand now offers a special '90s style (which I personally love), it's worth buying a pair secondhand (or third, fourth, or fifth). But don't just throw money away on any pair of jeans; do your research first. "It's helpful to know your waist, hip, and leg measurements, even if you only have a rough idea," Emma Grant, head of secondhand jeans at eBay, told British Vogue. "This will help you find the perfect pair."
It can be difficult to keep up with seasonal denim trends—after all, baggy jeans, skinny jeans, ripped jeans, and so on are all trending at the same time. But this year, and maybe next year and the year after, I plan to devote myself entirely to the classics. A nice pair of vintage Levi's, worn the way God intended: straight-legged and on the hips, paired with a simple T-shirt and some black boots.
